About Us

Mission Statement

ART PRO TEM is a private non-profit community-based corporation dedicated to bringing contemporary art of regional, national and international significance into the daily life of the Ann Arbor, MI, area. To fulfill this mission we will:

  1. Present temporary installations of experimental art in downtown Ann Arbor by:
    • Identifying candidate sites
    • Inviting curators and artists to submit proposals for site-specific projects
    • Choosing artists for sites and producing exhibitions
    • Publicizing exhibitions

  2. Support an on-going group that will:
    • Plan a series of temporary art installations
    • Raise funds for the exhibitions and all efforts involved
    • Stimulate community interest
    • Maintain community relations
    • Record audience involvement to establish a track record for contemporary art

  3. Establish an Artist-In-Residence Program by inviting nationally known artists for long term involvement in creating installations for a given downtown space..

In The Beginning…

ART PRO TEM has been presenting challenging contemporary art in experimental forms in the Ann Arbor area since 2000. We began as a group of long time Ann Arborites from the arts, the University, and the business sector interested in seeing a vital visual arts scene in Ann Arbor. Our initial goal was a downtown exhibition space but soon redirected our energy into an ongoing program of temporary exhibitions in nontraditional sites in the downtown area. Coupling these roving exhibits with a series of talks housed in the Ann Arbor District Library's Multipurpose Room gave us a home base where the community could meet regularly to discuss issues in contemporary art and design.

We have sought from the beginning to partner with the University of Michigan to maximize local resources and audience impact, while retaining substantial community leadership and autonomy. Our initial program development is designed to preserve this balance and engage the University and non-University communities throughout the process.

The Ann Arbor area represents a large audience that should not be underestimated, one often focussed on entertainment and education. People gather here for a variety of reasons, one of which is Ann Arbor's reputation for experimentation. They are ready and waiting for visual stimulation; our goal is to give them the best.

Our Goals

  • To present new media to new audiences in challenging yet accessible ways
  • To use places where art is unexpected for artistic experimentation
  • To challenge audience understanding about the nature of visual art and its role in public life
  • To enlarge the audience for artistic experimentation
  • To enliven the Ann Arbor and University communities
  • To facilitate interaction and the sharing of resources between downtown Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan
